Windows Live Hotmail
Hotmail along with Yahoo, was the first to start the email craze in Nepal and it revolutionised the way we communicated. Offering just 1 MB of space back then, Hotmail now gives 5 GB plus. Maybe that's the reason why we see so many people with @hotmail.com address. The soul reason now, however, for people to sign up for Hotmail is to use MSN Chat but you should know that you can access MSN without a Hotmail address. Besides the chat, Hotmail has an easy interface to work with.

Yahoo! Mail
Yahoo! is probably the least used email address in Nepal. Very few people opt to choose Yahoo! Mail over Hotmail or Gmail. But our neighboring country, India, has plenty of Yahoo users, giving a boost to the company. Yahoo has recently introduced email chat. This allows users to chat from your inbox, without the need to download a messenger for it. The chat is sophisticated and easy to use. What Yahoo gives which other mail boxes don't give is Sign-in-Seal. When you're signing in, if you don't see your sign-in seal, it's likely to be a spoof page created by a phisher to steal your personal information. Taking users privacy seriously, this was introduced and it works. Other features are pretty much similar to that of Hotmail.

Gmail
Hotmail and Yahoo's living time is surely gone. This has got to be the Gmail generation. With easy interface, built-in chat, text, voice, or video to free SMS (only in the US), Gmail has over 7 GB of storage and not to mention the features they are planning to add. It also brought a revolution by adding chat in the web interface and so everyone else including Hotmail and Yahoo have been busy creating something similar for its users. Another cool thing about Gmail is that, you get to use the features before it is launched. However, not everyone gets to use it. You need to be a regular gmail-er and seeing your log-in entries, it allows you to use such features. If you are a true-gmail-er you will see 'New Lab Feature' besides your setting (top right). Educational excellence will remain a dream until party politics is kept away from college campuses
Last week's student elections in colleges across the country were miniature versions of state and local elections. What with the political heavyweights, including ministers, joining in the canvassing campaigns, one can conclude that political parties and their leaders unabashedly use students for their political ends. The scenes we watched on television were similar to those from non-student political elections. Many campuses witnessed violence, which is never a part of free and fair election. There were also reports that attempts were made to capture ballot boxes. Counting of ballots were put off at a few campuses due to tension between student groups aligned to different political parties. The violence took a more serious turn in east Nepal when one student was killed in police firing. The state run television reported that four persons including a college principal were abducted in west Nepal. It seems for political parties, the student elections are as important as other elections in obtaining political offices and seats. No wonder there were allegations that the students who used subsidised transport and other facilities spent lots of money on elections. The open involvement of political parties in student body elections gives rise to suspicions that the aim of student elections goes far beyond improving the quality of education in colleges.
Most students go to college to pursue higher education and become able citizens of the country and the world. But there are others who, in the guise of students, are there to indulge in politics and to keep the banners of their parties afloat by winning in union elections. And this kind of student power is seen mostly in least developed countries like Nepal and also in developing countries like India. It is not that students do not take part in politics. They do. For instance, in Nepal they were active in the pro-democracy movements of 1990 and 2006. During the Vietnam War, the usually peaceful college campuses in the United States erupted against the establishment. In other countries too, students have been a potent force in the change of governments or even political system. But once these goals are achieved, the primary concern of students is education and it is here that they need to concentrate. Places of learning should be kept away from power politics. The disturbance caused by elections based on party lines cannot bode well for the future of the students. But it is true that student bodies must be elected by the students to ensure that their academic life is not marred by poor quality education, incompetent teachers, absence of extra-curricular activities, and other distractions such as unnecessary politicisation of student bodies. Student unions work for the welfare of students in their respective campuses and should try to keep politics away from academic affairs.
The way political leaders, including top Maoist ministers, went on to campaign in campuses to ensure the victory of panels loyal to their parties is a development that must be deplored in no uncertain terms. The general feeling as this writer perceived in the course of talks with ordinary people was that this kind of political interference in student affairs should not set a precedent for the future. This puts at stake academic freedom which is necessary in all academic institutions worth the name. Student unions, apart from working for the welfare of students, can help their respective institutions strengthen their reputations and stand alongside the world's best institutions so that their graduates are respected everywhere and their degrees and diplomas not considered inferior, as they are today in many countries. Students alone cannot and should not be blamed for what has happened to our present education system. Political parties that unscrupulously use students through their student wings are more to blame. Our political parties are a bane to our students' quest for educational excellence. The parties lack vision and do not seem to realise the long term implications of their present actions. Otherwise they would not be using students for their own political ends despite knowing that students would best serve themselves, their families, their country and even their parties by concentrating on studies and on campus activities instead of party-driven student politics. Student politics during the recent elections took a violent turn. Curfew had to be imposed in some places. And votes could not be counted in a few campuses till Sunday afternoon. But this is less a reflection on the students themselves than on the parties that condone and encourage such activities. Things are not going to improve unless political parties make it a point to stay away from student affairs and not to use students in any political activities designed for short term gains. But it would be futile to expect our leaders to take decisions that would benefit the nation in the long run at the cost of their short-term party interests. But unless this kind of decision is taken by political parties, we are doomed to see students used by political parties even for petty political activities. Educational excellence will remain a distant dream for us until party politics is kept away from college campuses
The success of Nepal Red has raised the expectations of Nepali football fans
After a two-year hiatus in all forms of competitive football, Nepali football fans had something to cheer about on Saturday when Nepal Red beat the Sri Lankan national team 4-2 in a tie-breaker to clinch the inaugural Prime Minister Cup Invitational Football Tournament. The competition, which featured six-teams -- two from Nepal (Red and Blue), the national sides of Sri Lanka and Pakistan and a club side each from Thailand and Bangladesh -- also provided members of the Nepali national team much-needed practice ahead of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenger Cup scheduled to kick off March 26 in Kathmandu.
The Maoist-affiliated Nepal Republican Sports Federation (NRSF), which organised the tournament in collaboration with the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), deserves some credit for their effort to bring Nepali football lovers quality action on the pitch; but sadly, the overall management of the tournament left much to be desired. Many people have, with some justification, seen the tournament as nothing more than an effort on the part of Maoist youths to ingratiate themselves with Prime Minster Pushpa Kamal Dahal. And to raise some moolah. Notably, no accounts have been kept of the approximately Rs. 8 million collected from ticket sales. The winning Nepali players, the real crowd-pullers, didn't get a penny for their hard work.
Security lapses were alarming too. Following Nepal Red's win in the final at Dashrath Stadium, hundreds of supporters swarmed onto the field, cutting short the players' celebrations and seriously undermining the security of the visiting Sri Lankan national team. Security measures will have to be tightened if Nepal is to avoid a fiasco in the upcoming AFC tournament. There were other glitches too. ANFA made another blunder by appointing Nepali referees and linesmen even in games involving Nepali teams. In a tight game, with a partisan crowd behind the home team, foreign teams rely heavily on referees to make bias-free calls. Thus, the Pakistan contingent's accusation of bias against their players cannot be dismissed out of hand. The scheduling was just as bad. At one point, Nepal Red had to play three games in a span of four days. These are just some of the concerns ANFA will have to address before the AFC tournament.
The success of Nepal Red has raised the expectations of Nepali football fans, many of whom will be hoping for similar success in the upcoming AFC qualifiers. But they need to be realistic about Nepal's chances. Football is by far the most popular sport in the country. So much so that people associate the success of the Nepali national team with their own pride. But unlike cricket, played at the top level by only a handful of countries, football is a truly international game played competitively in almost every country in the world. Hence Nepalis need to maintain a sense of proportion when they weigh Nepal's prospects in the international football arena.
Yogamber Suwal, who has already coached Nepal in the seventh SAF Games in Madras in 1995, has been re-appointed head coach of Nepal's national team now busy preparing for the AFC cup in a closed camp. Let us hope that Nepal builds on Nepal Red's success at the Prime Minister's Cup when they take on the likes of Kyrgyzstan, Palestine and Afghanistan -- each of which can be a tough nut to crack on a given day -- during the AFC Challenger Cup. Some managerial and security issues need to be sorted out. Besides that, all that genuine supporters of Nepali football ask for is for the players to give it their best shot.
Ah! It's that time of the year again. The colourful and vibrant festival of Holi is at hand. The festival has mythological roots stretching back to ancient times. But, over the years, the cultural and religious legacy of Holi is being undermined by the ones who should be their custodians: the young generation.Overzealous youngsters are ruining the mood for the rest of Nepalis who want to celebrate the festival of colours with their loved ones on the slated day.
The festival has itself seen some changes in the last couple of years. For instance, the old lolas consisted of water-filled balloons. These days, the lolas have morphed into tiny plastic bags filled with water, their mouths tied by rubber bands. The reasons for the replacement are simple: Plastic bags are easier to fill up and they hurt like hell for those at the receiving end.
From little boys and girls to old men and women, everybody has an opinion regarding Holi. City Post offers you a sampling.
She says:
"I am on my toes soon as I see little patches of water on the street for they indicate water pranks being played in the area. I have to keep my eyes on terraces and windows of the houses as I walk," says Binaya Gwanwali, 21, a student of Kathmandu Model College. "It's a really scary time for girls!"
Says Bandana Paudel, another recent graduate, from Basundhara: "My horrendous experience in previous years make me detest Holi." She elaborates, "Being hit by lola while you are on your way to some important work is highly inconveniencing, painful and humiliating."
School and college students seem equally at ease to hurling lolas inside the compound of their alma mater. "Even those not interested in participating are being targeted, that too inside school and college premises," says Padma Maskey, a schoolteacher.
In order to save their students from the painful experience, education institutions close three to four days in advance of the big day. But staying at home gets on the nerve of students like college freshman Richa Sharma, who doesn't shy from giving the guys a whack on the back offered a chance. "I try not to get caught throwing lolas. I am equally careful not to be hit by one," she says tongue-in-cheek.
He says:
"Come on! It is the only time of the year we get to tease, scare and irritate girls," says a young man from among the group of college boys of a Ravibhawan-based government college. They say it is fun to ambush girls in group. "In a way, we are rebels who want to have fun at the expense of other people."
"The festival in itself is not bad if celebrated properly and timely. It bears religious value and gives a reason for people to come together," says 67-year-old Krishna S. However, according to him, the boys these days act like mad dogs, chasing poor girls with water balloons, making a disgrace of the great festival.
On the other hand, there are people like Nikesh Shakya who's given up the old habit. "When I was eleven, I got into big trouble during Holi." One of the persons he threw balloon at failed to see the funny side of it. He barged into the house and raised a hell. "I had learned my lesson. From that day I play Holi only with my family and friends," says the 21-year-old student at Pulchowk Engineering College.
The festival has given young people an excuse to express their animal instinct. But as is clearly evident from the remarks above, it is not the festival itself people dislike, but the wrong trend that has developed on the pretext of celebrating Holi. Let us celebrate the great festival of Holi to the fullest, but also keep in mind that our celebrations do not cause someone else unnecessary trouble.
